A beautiful piece of German Jugendstil design from THEODOR FAHRNER, Pforzheim, Germany, dating to c1908. Please refer to the book “Theodor Fahrner Jewelry between Avantgarde and Tradition” by Schmundt Weber Becker, p139, where you will see similar designs. This pendant has lost the drop over the course of its life (quite typical for these pieces it seems) but there is so much going on with the spacers and the rare flower detail above the circular pendant section, that it retains a balanced look and is such a rare design.
As mentioned, this is fully signed with the maker’s mark for Theodor Fahrner (TF in a circle). It is also stamped as “935” silver, which has a higher silver content than sterling and was usually retained for the creation of the finer pieces of jewellery. DEPOSE appears too which means it was registered by the company of Theodor Fahrner and is, indeed, a protected design. The green paste is typical too….these pieces either used amethyst or this shade of green paste.
I love these roundels of hand-hammered silver, with the cut-out sections and those tiny silver filigree spirals. It is a lovely touch to have one of those spirals o each side of the roundel, from which to connect the chains. That three-petalled flower detail above the disk is unusual to see and I also love the three-leafed silver spacers in the chain. Gorgeous! The pendant measures approx 3.4cm in height and the wearable length of the chain is approx 46cm (18 inches). There has been a catch replacement at some time in her history.
I am happy to include the fine, silver barrel-clasp chain, which measures approx 40.5cm (approx 16 inches).
A lovely design, the likes of which feature in literature dating them from the early years of the 1900s. It is in good condition, also carrying all the marks you would hope to find on such a Fahrner jewel from the era
