Description

I have no qualms suggesting that this is a unique piece of antique jewellery. Hand crafted in gold, this beautiful crab, set with a blister pearl and the legs studded in old-cut diamonds, dates from the Victorian era, so late 1800s. If you look really closely you can see to the verso, that it perhaps started life with brooch fittings, although a competent jeweller has made this conversion historically, I would guess in the Edwardian era, as the chain is reminiscent of the designs in the Edwardian era.

It is a sumptuous piece of fine jewellery and is sure to appeal to many. The Victorian crab is hand-crafted in 9ct gold, with the setting for the blister pearl being gold too. The legs of the crab are decorated with 18 old-cut diamonds so they add such a lightness and glimmer to the piece. They are set in silver so the clear sparkle of the diamonds is shown to best effect. Two red pastes are used as eyes. Such a very beautiful crab -how perfect for Cancerians – a unique piece.

The 18ct gold chain is astonishingly gorgeous too, as it has small cuboid stations decorated with diamonds along its length. There is an old-cut diamond to every one of the four sides of each stations, set in silver. Delicate work and so very attractive. There are 10 of these stations all together. That makes 40 diamonds in the chain and 18 in the crab, hence 58 old-cut diamonds in total.

The wearable length of the chain is approx 59cm (just over 23 inches) and the crab measures approx 3.1cm by 2cm. All diamonds have been tested and all the stones are in present and correct. The chain retains its original antique barrel clasp fastener. It is all in pleasing condition and you simply will not find another like it!
