Description

This is a beautiful Arts and Crafts trinket by the Gaskins c1905. It is a documented family piece, which has come down through the family of Joscelyne Gaskin, the eldest daughter of Arthur and Georgie Gaskin. The central section was attached to a fine trace chain, of bracelet length and I do believe it was original to the piece. It is very unusual to come across a Gaskin bracelet but I believe it was made by Georgie (she generally made the pieces) for her own little girl, Joscelyne. Sadly the small chain was unfit for purpose, so the bracelet has been added to an antique silver gilt Arts and Crafts necklace chain, which suits not only the silver gilt finish, but also the delicate proportions of the original work.

The Gaskins were rather a glamorous couple and there is a wonderful archive of their family photos at the Birmingham Museum and Galleries, showing their flare and style. I attach one such photo from an article entitled “At Home with the Gaskins”, 15.Nov 2011, Birmingham Museum and Galleries. It shows Georgie positioned next to Joscelyne.

There is a beautiful simplicity to the work in this piece, which means you can actually imagine the little girl wearing this with her “Sunday best” outfits. I adore pink tourmalines, they are so sweet with their pale pink sparkles. These are faceted and bounce the light well. I also love the playful element of the flower drop, set with the largest of the pink tourmalines. It is articulated and moves around joyfully at the bottom of the drop. Twisted love knot links fasten to the silver gilt chain, which, very fittingly, is set in a typical A&C quatrefoil design.

A lovely Gaskins’ piece, which has come to us directly from the family- making it extra special. There must have been a strong attachment to the piece for Joscelyne…most likely of childhood memories and of her parents.

The necklace measures approx 47cm (18.5 inches) in length. In pleasing condition with no damage to the stones. A beautifully poignant piece of English Arts and Crafts history.

I shall send in a new gift box as the box in the images is for display only. Complimentary special delivery within the UK or else express courier internationally.
