Description

A unique and wonderful hand-crafted Arts and Crafts wreath pendant by Mary Thew (one of the Glasgow Girls) in the earlier years of the twentieth century. It demonstrates beautifully her unique silver knots wire work, stylised leaves and placement of attractive gems within the design. This is definitely one of the finer pieces I have come across by Mary and I love the more petite sizes of the stones, which means, naturally, there are more of them crammed into this fabulous design.

As Mary crafted each piece herself, you can be assured that this is a completely unique piece of work. This statement piece was originally a brooch although seems to work much better as a pendant, due to that flattened out silver ropework section that functions well with the bale. With many typical Mary features, I am pleased to see flowers set in the foliate design too (more unusual to find flowers alongside the silver leaves).

No less than 15 gems decorate this statement piece, with 4 being opals. The opal at the base of the design is a complete showstopper and flashes electric turquoise/green very easily. The colour palette is superb with the greens, browns, reds and purples. We can find opals, jade and carnelian cabochons, among others. Each stone carefully bezel set by hand. I am happy to include the silver chain in the images although it is not of the same age as the Thew piece, but a more modern piece.

In lovely condition, with some age-related patina and ready to wear. The diameter of the brooch is approx 5cm, so it is a larger example. A beautiful example of Mary Thew’s work, stuffed with gems and having a carefully-considered colour palette.

I shall send in a gift box by Special Delivery within the UK or else by International express courier. Boxes in the images are for display only and are not included.
