Description
An attractive, large, hand-crafted Arts and Crafts brooch firmly attributed to Amy Sandheim of London, in the earlier years of the twentieth century. It features several attributes usually found in her pieces. I love the small openwork panels that have been arranged around the central MOP cabochon and the mix of stones is beautiful too.
The citrines are set at the cardinal points and there are four oval moonstones set in pairs above and below the central MOP. There is always a sense of fragility in this stylised silver openwork, reminding me of lace. It adds an air of delicacy to what is essentially a very difficult material with which to work. There is a lightness too to the colour selection that works well within the overall design.
In typical Amy style, there has been some fortification and welding to ensure the panels are secure. I have seen this on a number of her pieces now, so I suppose that is the difficulty in using many separate pieces and especially these more “lace-like” silver panels.
In very good condition. The stones are closed-back and you can see evidence of water / cleaning agent that has got into the settings at some point. Again, very typical as people use liquid cleaners and really only a specific cloth should be used to avoid this. All stones are intact and there is still the adularescence on the moonstones that you would wish for. It measures approx 7cm by 5.6cm so is a statement size.
I shall send in a gift box by Special Delivery within the UK or else by International Express courier. Boxes in the images are for display only and are not included. Thank you.
