An instantly recognisable and fabulously hand-crafted Amy Sandheim sterling silver statement pendant necklace c1930. Amazingly, the main stone is Connemara marble (“Ireland’s gemstone”) with its fabulous greens. Connemara marble is classified as a rare gemstone as the one quarry where it was mined, in the Connemara area in Western Ireland, closed decades ago. I have never seen an Arts and Crafts piece like this with such a beautiful Connemara stone. It is a rare piece indeed!
In typical Amy fashion, she has set other gem stones among the foliate and berry silver decoration. There are white moonstones, a mother-of-pearl cabochon and a wonderful blue moonstone sitting at the centre. This pendant was hand-made and is a unique piece- never two pieces exactly the same. You can see the huge amount of work that has gone into the creation of every single leaf in this design.
The long silver sautoir chain has occasional diamond-shaped links and is a versatile chain as it can be worn singly, doubled up or even tripled. It’s amazing to think how long these necklaces were back in the 1920s and 1930s. The bale behind the top moonstone is large and you could change the chain if you wished to vary the look or length of the necklace.
In such pleasing condition- with some patina remaining. It looks like it has been well cared-for over the years. The pendant is large and measures approx 10.6cm in height. The chain is approx 142cm (56 inches) long. Crafted in sterling silver throughout. It is becoming rarer and rarer to find new-to-the-market Amy Sandheim pieces so I don’t think this unique and lovely, statement example will hang around for long at all.
An absolute treasure! I shall post in a new gift box by Special Delivery within the UK or else by express international courier. Thank you. Boxes in the images are for display only -thank you.
