Description
A rarity from the c1920s era and a lovely example of a drop lavalier necklace. Crafted in 9ct gold, this necklace features three polished rutilated quartz stones suspended from the main chain. This is a rare thing, as I have not seen much from that era which displays the wonderful rutilated quartz stone. These drops feature the Venus’ Hair rutiles, which are like bright golden strands of blonde hair. I am completely fascinated by this natural phenomenon and have been studying the rutiles under the jeweller’s loupe. An incredible natural inclusion in the quartz stone discovered in the early years of the twentieth century, with many examples being from Brazil.
The drops are each different in form to the last; the central stone is suspended from a gold knife-edge link and flanked by a stone on each side, simply connected to the main chain. I adore the smoothed feel of the stones and also the naturalistic shapes – it is just so unusual to see this type of antique lavalier. The golden strands within the stones are complemented by the use of yellow gold for the execution of the necklace. The stones are polished flat on their verso so that they sit well when worn.
In pleasing condition-one tiny fleabite from the back side of the bottom left of the drop on the right, as you look at it. It seems to have been smoothed out somewhat but please check the images to make sure you’re happy with her history, as it is detectable under scrutiny at the front of the necklace. The shapes of the stones are organic, with each being different so that helps hugely. Catch replacement has been made at some point in the past. Tests as 9ct gold. Height of longest drop is approx 6.1cm and the wearable length of the chain is approx 46cm (approx 18 inches).
