Description
I adore coming across new pieces by George Hunt, as each is individual and unique. George Edward Hunt (1892-1960), the talented Arts and Crafts designer, attended Birmingham’s Vittoria Street School. George became deaf at a young age and was known to have worked on his distinctive jewellery in a workshop at the bottom of the garden, in true Arts and Crafts style! His pieces are rare as he did not mass produce his work, preferring to work on each himself as a separate and unique work of art.
In November and December of 2006, his work was showcased, in a touring exhibition supported by Bonhams of London. This piece screams George Hunt, in both its distinctive enamel work, the silver leaves and scrolls details and also in the cluster of mixed gem stones, in pinks and blues, like some other pieces I have handled over the years. The cobalt blue enamel panel has gold scroll detailing overlaid and is beautifully placed in the arrangement with those typical Hunt leaves draped above it. At the top of the large, statement pendant is a solid silver stepped detail, which nods at the Art Deco styling of the early 1930s era. This is identical to a dress clip and other pieces by Hunt I have handled over the years.
The choice of moonstones (which are very adularescent) with a pale baby pink rose quartz and a pale chalcedony stone is such a lovely selection and quite typical of Hunt’s choices of colour palette. Lovely to see a large pendant like this, instead of a brooch or a clip and also pleasing to find it attached to such a chunky hand-crafted silver Arts and Crafts chain with its original toggle fastener.
The pendant measures approx 5cm by 3.7cm and the chain measures approx 56cm (22 inches) in length. A beautiful piece in excellent order and a wonderful addition to anyone’s A&C collection. I shall send in a new gift box by Special Delivery within the UK or else by courier internationally. Thank you.
