A beautiful hand wrought c1900 antique necklace, very much in the Arts and Crafts genre of design. Every leaf, every berry, flower and so on has been created and applied by hand.
I love the almost contemporary feel of the five “showy” flowers, with their large flouncy petals, each show casing a moonstone at their centre. With a large bezel set moonstone sitting at the base of the design and the moonstone set as a spacer further up the chain – it ties the whole moonstone theme together beautifully. The open work, central plaque section is actually much larger than most pieces of this age – at approx 6.2cm in height. This mean that including the moonstone spacer above, the whole pendant section measures approx 9.2cm in height. The chains seem to be the original ones and the wearable length of the necklace is approx 45cm (17.5 inches).
The moonstones and detailing are set in the perfect place when worn, high enough to be seen but not tight at the throat, like so many shorter antique chains. All silver work and moonstones are intact and in pleasing condition. Just the catch has been replaced in her past. All of the moonstones are closed back. Some (like the large stone at the bottom of the design) have much more of a blue flash than others. Please do look at the reverse of the piece, as you can see the huge amount of time and energy someone has expended to create this beautiful necklace.
