A c1930s hand crafted double-sided pendant necklace from Dorrie Nossiter with her trademark leaf design and three striking vein elements. These lovely Arts and Crafts pendants with the teardrop shaped stones were made by Dorrie, as well as by Sibyl Dunlop and Amy Sandheim. This one has all of those striking Dorrie touches in the shapes of the leaves on either side, clusters of silver berries, all applied individually and the curled vine tendrils at the bottom of the design, each one different to the last.
The silver cap is large and it is the same design on both sides, so it doesn’t matter if the pendant turns as you wear it. I also love the large and rather statement bale at the top of the pendant, where silver wire has been threaded around the bale. The rather rounded slice of rose quartz is a teardrop shape and this piece has clearly been selected because of the the huge amount of interest within the pale pink stone. There are inclusions and natural fissures, some reaching the surface. As I was checking with the loupe, I even spotted a rainbow-like patch on one edge. The rose quartz is so interesting, you have to take a loupe and see how much is going on there. A few little surface pits on the bottom edge, visible with the loupe, where the fissures end but it is a natural characteristic of the stone rather than any damage.
This heavy silver sautoir chain dating from the Victorian era, has a large belcher structure and a dog clip for attaching it to the pendant. A faded silver stamp is on the clip. The chain alone is a mighty 31.3g in weight and measures approx 107cm (42 inches) in length. The pendant is approx 6.4cm in height from the top of the wrapped wire bale to the base of the stone.
