Description
This is more than “rare” or “scarce” as it is almost certainly a one-off creation and a rather magical thing at that. Signed “Grandhomme” this is probably one of a handful of remaining jewellery pieces created by the Parisien, Paul Grandhomme (1851-1944). He trained initially as a jeweller but later became a celebrated sculptor. His work is held in wonderfully high esteem, being currently exhibited at the world’s most prestigious galleries and museums, such as the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This unique necklace is very much a museum piece.
This a sautoir necklace, typical of the 1900s era, longer in length and designed to make quite the impression. The mother-of-pearl plaque is scintillating, showing Grandhomme’s skills to the max. The accurately naturalistic quality of the goddess is given ethereal treatment by this fabulous mother-of-pearl, in the shimmers and nuances of natural colour of the shell. The way the relief work has been worked to show the delicateness of the form of the limbs and the lines of the goddess is sublime. The way the wind and the clouds are represented by the simplest of lines is exquisite. All this against the backdrop of a creamy mother-of-pearl plaque, presenting whispers of purples, greys and greens. It is such a celebration of Grandhomme’s work.
The original chain has stations of mother-of-pearl beads in groupings of three, along with individual beads at the meeting of the pendant. The drop mirrors the beads in the chain, as that too has three beads. All in excellent condition and all original, asides from the bolt ring clasp which is certainly a replacement. Some patina so it would polish further if you so desired. The diameter of this statement pendant is approx 6.3cm and the wearable length of the chain is approx 84cm (33 inches).
