A glorious c1900 piece by Martin Mayer of Mainz, and fully signed with his maker’s mark. This wonderful example of Jugendstil / Art Nouveau design is in the form of a dragonfly, a popular motif in the era. It shows how effective the art of plique-a-jour work can look to bring an object to life. The colours of the plique are in fabulous naturalistic shades of greens and plums…simply outstanding! When you let the light behind the wings, then that is when you see the full glory of the plique effect.

The dragonfly is dotted with sparkling pastes from top to the end of the tail, with the largest paste twinkling away where the four wings meet. Two small pink tourmaline cabochons are dotted in as eyes. Every stone is intact and complete with no damage.

There is a pale gold wash over the silver work on the pendant and on its two small side chains and jump ring. The jump ring is stamped with tiny marks but I just can’t make them out. The plique is in excellent condition and I have to say- it is rare to find a piece of this age in such lovely shape.

From the jump ring, the pendant measures approx 5.6cm in height and approx 3.2cm wide. Clear marks for “935” (higher silver content than sterling) and the wheel and star maker’s mark for Martin Mayer of Mainz.

Please note the box in the images is for display only-I will, however, send to you in a new gift box. She will travel by either International courier or else Special Delivery within the UK. I am sorry but I can not send to Germany at the moment.
