A wonderful find, a Mathias Scheidel antique Jugendstil / Art Nouveau necklace from the c1900, which is also a documented book piece. It has been documented as image S3 on page 300 of the wonderful book “Art Nouveau jewellery from Pforzheim” by Fritz Falk. You can see that the necklace I am selling even has the same original chains, as on the example in the book. It is a hugely evocative design of the Art Nouveau movement, with its sinuous lines and broad leaves.
The panel in the centre looked like enamel at first but I believe it is a slice of lapis lazuli. Those stylised lines in silver look so dramatic against the blue of the stone. The two pairs of flattened leaves to either side actually look gold in some of the images, however, this is simply patina across the silver. If you prefer it to be a shining, patina-free piece then you just need to polish away the patina of the years.
I love the way the chain has those elongated, paper clip type of links and also the way that the chains connect higher up than the pendant, to give that beautiful drop frame for the pendant. A lustrous natural pearl as the drop adds that element of articulation to the piece. The pendant drop (from the horizontal section of chain to the bottom of the pearl) measures approx 6cm and the wearable length of the chain is approx 51cm (20 inches). In pleasing condition, with some patina as mentioned earlier. Stamped “800” to verso as was typical of those Scheidel pieces-there was a similar Scheidel brooch I sold years ago with the same verso and mark.
I will send by complimentary express courier internationally or else Special Delivery within the UK-thank you. Box in images is for display purposes only.
