A fabulous rarity, which tells a story rooted in both the Navajo traditions crafted in the White Hogan Gallery in Arizona, as well as the cool, sleek lines of the Danish silversmith, Georg Jensen. This is such a wonderful piece of true hand-crafted Arts and Crafts work that fuses the traditions and ideals of both jewellery schools. Signed as an original piece of work by the Navajo silversmith, Allen Kee (1916-1972), it has his maker’s marks as well as “STERLING”, stamped to the verso.
Kee was one of the foremost silversmiths creating pieces at the famous White Hogan Gallery in Arizona. They were a progressive group of artists who were hugely inspired in the 1950s and 1960s by the creations of Georg Jensen, the celebrated Danish silversmith. The Gallery’s work fused the Navajo traditional elements of materials, stones, motifs and so on, with the desire to modernise the pieces with sleek, clean lines , such as those used in the Danish pieces. This rare piece of art shows the success of the concept beautifully.
This design is worked in both sterling silver, with highlighted rivet-type features picked out in gold. The striking spring-like coils and silver balls reference the Danish style of Jensen, whilst the piece maintains its Navajo heritage too.
Kee signed pieces are highly collectable. I love the use of that huge amazonite stone, as the stone (according to the Navajo traditions) is a stone of healing, for balancing and grounding, as well as connecting to the energy of mother earth herself. A highly spiritual stone.
In excellent condition, the piece is what I would consider a museum piece because of what it represents. It is a statement size at approx 5cm by 4cm. The amazonite stone has that lovely duck egg to green colour, with the characteristic speckles. A beautiful thing!
