A rare design, of which I have only seen one other before. That particular example was sold by Tadema Gallery in London and is also illustrated on p.52 in the book “Tadema Gallery, London Jewellery from the 1860s to the 1960s” by Beatriz Chadour-Sampson and Sonya Newell-Smith. This spider and web necklace has been skilfully hand-crafted by the best goldsmiths, with the gold work of the web being sublime; as if it really had been spun. It was crafted c1900 in stamped 9ct gold throughout and also clearly bears the “MBc” Murrle Bennett maker’s mark.
This is a striking and yet delicate piece of antique jewellery, with a gloriously golden web forming the main part of the pendant. The interwoven thread work is exquisite. It is set with a tiny pearl to its centre. As was the taste at the time, a drop is suspended below the main panel. Cleverly executed on a long, knife edge link of gold, a gold spider is suspended on what represents a silken thread. A further pearl and a turquoise decorate the spider. To the verso, the spider is stamped with “9CT” and “MBc”. It is an amazing design- a piece of Art, where the jewellery tastes of the 1900 era have been translated into a naturalistic theme. It is a beautiful thing indeed.
The height of the pendant section is approx 8cm and the wearable length of the chain is approx 43cm (17 inches) in length.
Complimentary Special Delivery is included within the UK and Express courier internationally. Thank you. A new gift box will be supplied as the boxes in the images are not included.
