An outrageously beautiful and unique c1905 Arts and Crafts masterpiece by the Artificers’ Guild. How appropriate coming up to Valentine’s Day to find such a spectacular heart-shaped black opal with so many fiery colours within her. The pictures do not do justice to how fiery this stone is; it is sensational, with blues and greens and more red flashes than I have ever seen in an opal before. This is as good as it gets for Arts and Crafts pieces too-a wonderful design by a sought-after maker, crafted in buttery 18ct yellow gold, showing the foliate and floral designs at their absolute best. This certainly will not hang around long at all.
With a particularly triangular-shaped bale, very reminiscent of Liberty & Co’s pendants, this is such a light and ethereal piece of design and craftspersonship. The buttery gold surmount arches over the opal heart with well-placed leaves draped in a naturalistic design. Five flowers intersperse the design -incredible to see the level of detail in this completely hand-crafted piece of work. The pendant hides a little secret, as I can see it has a discreet hinge so it was actually crafted as a locket. It seems quite happy to stay locked so I have not forced the issue. If you did wish to take a peek inside, I would ask a watch maker or a jeweller to open it. You wouldn’t want to distort the back of the pendant on such a beautiful thing.
Hugely attractive and oh so romantic- a perfect thing all round, in excellent shape for her age. The pendant measures approx 4.4cm in height, including the bale. It is paired with a 9ct gold slim paperclip type of chain with a barrel clasp, which is around the same age as the pendant. I am happy to include it for you. It measures approx 47cm (18.5 inches). It is stamped 9CT on the barrel.
Usually we find many A&C pieces of quality like this in silver so to find such an exceptional piece in 18ct gold with a heart-shaped opal-rare to say the very least. I adore it.
