What a fabulous antique jewel by Liberty & Co in the c1900 era. It falls clearly in with the designs of the first few years of the 1900s and appears very similar in design to the necklaces designed at the time for Liberty’s by Archibald Knox. I have photographed page 249 of Stephen A. Martin’s book “Archibald Knox”, so that you can see other examples from the same era. This station necklace has a five graduating plaque design, with sinuously organic lines rooted in the Art Nouveau style – it is a beautiful thing and, excitingly, I have not seen this particular design before.
Other touches give this away as a special jewel. The moonstones are all set in solid gold settings and the solid gold barrel clasp is a design I have seen on other Knox and Liberty pieces too. The baroque pearls appearing either sides of the plaques are also typical of other Knox designs. There is such a delicacy to the design generally, with the elegant rounded motifs, the adularescence of the moonstones and the creamy white of the pearl spacers.
So much to love on this rare piece, and it has been crafted with the most talented of jewellers’ hands. Even the moonstone settings in gold have been finished with an incredibly fine mille grain detail. The verso is to be admired-it is exquisite and the finish of the whole piece is truly exceptional. No marks as is typical, asides from the “9C” stamp on the barrel clasp. It is in stunningly good condition and that, too, is a welcome rarity for her age.
The height of the central plaque is approx 1.8cm and the wearable length of the necklace is approx 39.5cm (15.5 inches). In superb order. All original.
I will send by International express courier or else Special Delivery within the UK-thank you. Box in images is for display purposes only.
