A lovely early Sibyl Dunlop of London Arts and Crafts gemstones brooch from the c1925 era, which is set with amethysts and blue chalcedonies. Such a beautiful rotating leaves and flowers design from the mid 1920s and which also appeared on work hallmarked for Sibyl and for the year 1926. A rarer design, as I have seen a similar design come up a few times but not this one. This is the first time I have acquired a piece of this design.

I always love the colour combinations that were favourites of Sibyls. Here we have the purple and blue/lilac combination, achieved by the use of domed amethysts and blue chalcedonies. The rounded balls setting at the foot of the central stone is so typical of Sibyl’s work. Small flowers are decorated within the first halo after that and on the final halo, there are larger leaves that almost seem to have rotational movement in their design. Six alternating stones are set on the outer edge of the brooch.

On the verso, you can see the hand-planishing (hammering) in the silver work. It retains its pin, hinge and early rollover safety catch. The brooch measures approx 3.3cm in diameter and is in pleasing condition with a little wear to the stones but nothing major. There is a little surface-reaching inclusion in the main domed amethyst with a tiny little rainbow/silica detail….I’m assuming that’s why the stone was selected.  A very pretty confirmed Sibyl piece from the 1920s.

I shall send by Tracked and Signed in a box to keep her safe. Boxes in the images are for display only. Thank you.
