This is a completely fabulous hand-crafted English Arts and Crafts brooch, clearly by one of the leading names, I just don’t have enough to attribute solidly. It is very reminiscent of one of Dorrie’s designs. It is the most scintillating use of water opals and boy, do they have an amazing amount of colour to them. If you love purple or opals generally…then this treasure has to be for you.
Rare to find such a piece, with a carved lapis stone sent in a scalloped setting and flanked by 6 of the most highly coloured water opals I think I have ever seen. The 4 stones in a line to one side of the lapis are so well-matched and have a lot of electric purple veins running through them so that they show these violets as you move the brooch around. The single opal at either end of the design have predominantly electric blues and greens, which looks so amazing with the purple-based stones set between them.
Set in such a dynamic, triangular structure, the stones have silver coils set between them too. An exquisite piece in wonderful condition- all original, even has a straight pin. It has clearly been treasured and well cared-for over the years. It measures approx 9.5cm in length. She is a joy of a piece!
