Description

What a stunning piece of work by Mary Thew of the Glasgow Girls. Every piece she crafted by hand herself, so you will not find two pieces the same. I have to say that this is the most opulent and majestic pendant I have yet seen by Mary. The density of the foliate details on the silver cap is much more exuberant than I have seen before. In fact the length of the cap containing the intricate silver work is roughly the same size as the large faceted piece of of rock crystal visible in the design. This could easily be a museum piece of jewellery by Thew.

With those tell-tale Mary leaves and her typical knot motifs, there are also silver balls placed on their own and also in clusters. There are two very large clusters containing dozens of silver balls running down each side of the cap-completely wonderful. There are chunky stones, individually set on either side of the silver cap (isn’t it remarkable to have such heavy detailing on both sides of the pendant). One is an oval faceted rock crystal, bouncing the light so very easily and beneath to either side is a large Ceylon blue moonstone. The flashes of blue against the backdrop of the clear stones and the silver work, gives such a beautiful, crisp and clean effect.

The expertly-faceted rock crystal stone is immense and its cut is very Art Deco in shape, indicating the late 1920s to 1930s era. Its shape is rounded and this makes for a much more natural and organic pendant than would be achieved otherwise. It is really an important piece of work with significant silver detailing in a comprehensive and successful design. The bale is triangular, which I have seen in other pieces of her work, so there is the possibility of the pendant accommodating a substantial Arts and Crafts chain of your choice. I adore how Mary has placed knots on either side of the bale too, integrating the bale with its pendant beautifully.

In such pleasing condition, both silver and stones, and all oh so beautifully hand crafted. The drop on the pendant measures approx 11.5cm in height so it is an important and substantial piece of Scottish Arts and Crafts history. The listing is for the pendant only.
