What a truly sumptuous piece of work by Mary Thew of the Glasgow Girls. Every piece she crafted by hand herself, so you will not find two pieces the same. Mary served under the tutelage of Rhoda Wager, during her training in the creation of jewellery and, indeed, this piece was sold to me as a possible Wager piece. However, after having inspected her closely, I believe it to be a rare piece by Mary Thew, having several of the touches and motifs she often incorporated into her work. There surely cannot be many more Mary Thew original pieces out there still to find.
With those tell-tale Mary leaves of two kinds, the first very Wagneresque in their form and the second larger, rippled leaves with the wire main stem, they are accompanied by single silver balls, as well as clusters.
The silver work, again-all done by hand, is exquisite and well-considered. This is Mary with her skills of jewellery making at the height of her ability. The selection of stones is exquisite-blister pearls are wrapped in their own individual bezel settings and the piece is also decorated with three various faceted rock crystal stones. It is an ethereal and light piece of jewellery, celebrating what the designer and talented silversmith was capable of achieving. Light is bounced around freely by way of the sparkling rock crystal stones.
I adore the matching spacers set to each side of the main pendant. Each is decorated with those tiny Wagneresque leaves, a blister pearl, a cluster of three balls to each setting, as well a cluster of balls at the bottom of each panel.
An astonishingly beautiful and rare piece of Scottish Arts and Crafts history and a joy of a thing by a founder member of the Glasgow Girls.
In such pleasing condition, both silver and stones, with some patina. It enhances the depth of the appearance of the leaves so I have left it-you, however, may decide to polish it away. In all original condition-with original chains and wonderful hand-crafted decorative clasp. The main drop of the pendant measures approx 7.5cm and the wearable length of the chain is approx 42cm (16.5 inches).
