This is a magnificent late Victorian necklace c1900, which really is a superlative example of a fringe necklace. The gold is a high carat gold, which tests as 18ct. The amethysts are rich velvet purples in colour and I suspect they are Siberian amethysts, as the colour is so intense. Siberian amethysts are, indeed, the very best amethyst stones because of this same very rich, saturated dark purple colour.
This fabulous, fine fringe necklace has five beautifully-matched amethysts graduating in size from the largest in the centre. Each wonderfully sparkly and intensely-coloured stone is set in its own hand crafted spectacle setting. I adore the shape of these stones, as the stones are not designed to lie flat but to move and lie on their sides if anything, so you can fully appreciate the flat, faceted face, highlighting those rich, velvet plum colours, as well as the fabulously faceted pyramidical shaped reverses. They throw off so much light, which I have tried to capture in the images on the white surface…just sensational!
The necklace came from a private collection, which consisted of the most beautiful fine, antique pieces. A very discerning collector clearly. It retains its barrel clasp fastener (a tiny slightly little discoloured patch on it where someone has previously tested the gold). The necklace really is in pleasing condition…under intense scrutiny with the loupe, I found a teeny nibble to an edge on the central amethyst-not visible unless under magnification. She is really in super condition for such a Victorian piece. She measures approx 40cm (15.75 inches) in length. The largest amethyst is approx 1.2cm by 9mm wide and approx 9mm deep.
I will send by Special Delivery within the UK and by courier internationally for speed and security. I will package in a new gift box, which will protect her in transit. Boxes in the images are for display only- thank you.
