Description
A triumph of Arts and Crafts design c1920 from Bernard Instone. A desirable, unique piece with the most sumptuous details and an exquisite sense of symmetry. This is a carefully executed hand-crafted gold and silver sureté pin sometimes also named a jabot pin. Two decorated ends, with the smallest detaching so that the pin could be passed through fabric before the bottom section was reattached to the bottom of the pin.
This is a wonderful, high quality piece by Bernard and is one of the most beautifully executed pieces I have come across in quite a while. The design is achingly gorgeous with the carved jadeite jade disc at the top of the design. Sinuous snake lines of silver descend the edges of the jade disc, ending in a coiled tendril on each side. A cluster of three hand-tooled leaves to the right and left, along with a cluster of three chrysoprase berries. The pin is crafted from solid gold, making me believe this was a commission piece of work.
The bottom panel displays an upright cluster of three leaves and is set with a blue chalcedony at the top and a chrysoprase cabochon at the very end. Such a pleasing design to the eye, both in its structure as well as the carefully-selected materials. Flip the pin over and you see the precise hand-crafted finish to the verso that you would expect. There are jeweller’s serial number etchings for the design to the back of the bottom panel.
In pleasing order and would display beautifully as a museum piece or collection piece. Under close scrutiny with a 10x magnification loupe I could see a flea bite from one of the tiny chrysoprase stones – not visible with the naked eye. Some patina so she would clean further if desired. It measures approx 8.3cm in length. A beauty of a piece and even the gold pin is completely straight! A swoon worthy piece of design.
