Description

A truly scarce and most beautiful early Sibyl Dunlop Arts and Crafts piece, most likely from the mid 1920s. Delicately hand-crafted, it is a masterpiece of work juxtaposing shapes and featuring some of the stones she most liked to work with, including chalcedonies, chrysoprase and amethyst. The overall design is captivating, as you can see, highlighting Sibyl’s inspired use of design and stones.

I have seen smaller pieces of similar designs but this really is a statement size for an early piece. It sings Sibyl, having some of her typical scroll motifs in silver. Each stone has been individually set by hand into its setting, and they are also mille grain settings. Therefore, there has been a tremendous amount of hours used in the execution of this fine brooch. (There are two silver loops at the top of the design so if you wished to wear it as a pendant-your jeweller could easily attach chains for you).

The gems include amethyst, chrysoprase, blue chalcedony and pale peach chalcedony. Not only are the colours superb together, but the use of different shapes harks at the coming Art Deco years. We have circles, triangles and a central square stone. All stones are in order with no chips or cracks so it has been very well looked-after during her lifetime.

It is such a beautiful design which resonates with us as much today as it did 100 years ago. A joyful thing! It measures approx 4.6cm by 4.6cm. In super order, right down to the original (and straight!) pin and C clasp.

The box in the images is for display only but I will send it in a new box, to protect her during transit. Complimentary international courier or else special delivery within the UK is provided. Thank you.
